As a reseller, you can update an existing cPanel account directly from WebHost Manager (WHM) when a customer needs different settings, such as a different domain name, more disk space, or new resource limits. This article walks you through opening the account and saving changes.
About account modifications
The Modify an Account interface lets you change individual settings on a cPanel account without reassigning a full hosting package. Use it for one-off adjustments such as renaming the primary domain, updating the contact email, or fine-tuning quotas. To change a customer to an entirely different plan, use the Change Plan workflow instead.
Before you begin
- Reseller WHM access. You need WHM credentials with permission to modify the target cPanel account.
- The customer's domain name or username. Either value can be used to find the account in WHM.
- A clear list of changes. Decide what you are changing before you start so you can review the full page before saving.
Step 1: Open the List Accounts tool
- Sign in to WHM as the reseller.
- In the left-hand search box, type List Accounts.
- Click List Accounts to open the tool.
Step 2: Find the cPanel account
- In the search field, enter the customer's primary domain name or cPanel username.
- Locate the matching account in the results.
- Click the + (expand) icon next to the account to reveal account actions.
Step 3: Open the Modify Account interface
- Click the Modify Account button.
- WHM opens a form pre-populated with the account's current settings.
Step 4: Update account settings
Adjust any of the following on the Modify an Account page:
- Primary domain. Change the domain associated with the account.
- Username. Rename the cPanel user (use caution; this can break paths and scripts).
- Contact email. Update the email address that receives account notifications.
- Resource limits. Adjust disk quota, bandwidth limit, email accounts, databases, and other quotas.
- Shell access and other privileges. Toggle features available to the account.
Warning: Changing the username or primary domain can interrupt websites, email, and scripts that reference the old values. Coordinate with the customer before making these changes.
Step 5: Save your changes
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Click Save to apply the changes.
- Wait for WHM to display a confirmation that the account was updated successfully.
Next steps
- Confirm the customer's site still loads. Browse to the primary domain to verify the website and email are still working.
- Reassign a hosting package. If the customer needs a different overall plan, use the Change Plan workflow.
- Document the change. Note what you changed so the customer's account history stays accurate.
