This article explains how to reset the password for an email account hosted in cPanel. Reset a mailbox password whenever a user forgets their credentials, after a suspected compromise, or as part of routine account hygiene.
About cPanel email passwords
Each email account on your cPanel-hosted domain has its own password, separate from your cPanel login. Resetting one mailbox password does not change your cPanel password or the passwords for other mailboxes.
If you use the Enhanced Email product instead of cPanel mail, follow the Enhanced Email password reset guide.
- cPanel login credentials. You need access through the Exact Hosting portal or your domain's /cpanel URL.
- The full email address for the mailbox you want to update.
- A strong new password. Use a unique password with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, or let cPanel generate one for you.
Step 1: Log in to cPanel
Sign in through the Exact Hosting portal and open cPanel from your hosting dashboard, or go directly to yourdomain.tld/cpanel and enter your cPanel username and password.
Step 2: Open Email Accounts
From the cPanel home screen, locate the Email section and click Email Accounts. This opens the list of mailboxes attached to your domain.
Step 3: Choose the account to update
Find the email account you want to reset in the list of mailboxes.
Click Manage or Password, depending on your cPanel theme, next to that account.
Note: Button labels and layout vary slightly between cPanel themes.
Step 4: Enter the new password
In the New Password field, type the password you want to use.
Re-enter the same password in the Confirm Password field.
Warning: Changing a mailbox password signs the user out of any active email client sessions. They will need to update the password in every device and app that connects to this mailbox.
Step 5: Save the new password
Click Update Email Settings or Change Password to save the new credentials. cPanel applies the change immediately.
Next steps
- Update connected email clients. Update the saved password in Outlook, Apple Mail, phones, tablets, or any other app using the mailbox.
- Test webmail. Sign in at yourdomain.tld/webmail with the full email address and new password.
- Store the password securely. Save it in a password manager and share it only with authorized mailbox users.
