This article explains how to transfer a domain registration from another registrar into your Exact Hosting account. Before you start the transfer here, you need to prepare the domain at your current registrar by unlocking it and obtaining an EPP (auth) code.
About domain transfers
Transferring a domain moves the registration from your current registrar to Exact Hosting, so you can manage DNS, renewals, and contacts in one place. Transfers typically take 5 to 7 days and extend your registration by one year on completion.
.UK domains follow a different process: instead of using an EPP code, the losing registrar updates the IPS tag to ENOM before you initiate the transfer in your Exact Hosting Portal.
Before you begin
- An Exact Hosting account. You need login credentials for the Exact Hosting Portal.
- An unlocked domain. The domain must be unlocked at your current registrar before the transfer will succeed.
- The EPP (auth) code. Request this from your current registrar. .UK domains use an IPS tag instead.
- A registration not within the 60-day lock window. Newly registered or recently transferred domains cannot be transferred again until 60 days have elapsed, per ICANN policy.
- Access to the registrant email address. Transfer confirmation messages are sent to the registrant contact on file.
Step 1: Sign in to the Exact Hosting Portal
Open the Exact Hosting Portal and sign in with your credentials.
Step 2: Open the transfer page
From the top navigation, select Domains, then Transfer domains to us.
Step 3: Enter your domain and EPP code
Enter the domain name and the EPP code you received from your current registrar, then click Add to cart.
Step 4: Choose your DNS option
If you want to use Exact Hosting's nameservers, check the DNS management box. Then click Continue.
Tip: If you leave DNS management unchecked, your domain continues to use whichever nameservers were set at your previous registrar. You can change this later.
Step 5: Check out
Click Checkout to proceed to the order confirmation screen.
Step 6: Complete the order
Check the Terms of Service box and click Complete order. Exact Hosting submits the transfer request to the registry; you will receive email updates as the transfer progresses.
Transferring a .UK domain
Before you can transfer a .UK domain to Exact Hosting, the IPS tag must be updated at your current (losing) registrar.
- Contact your current registrar and request that the IPS tag be updated to ENOM.
- Once the IPS tag change is confirmed, return to Step 1 above and complete the transfer in process.
Warning: .UK transfers cannot proceed until the IPS tag is updated. Confirm the change with your current registrar before starting the transfer in the Exact Hosting Portal.
Next steps
- Watch your registrant email. The registry sends a confirmation request to your registrant contact; you may need to approve the transfer to complete it.
- Verify your domain contacts after transfer. Review and update contact details once the transfer completes. See Keeping your domain contacts up to date.
