This article explains how to view and update the registrant, admin, and tech contacts for your domains in the Exact Hosting client area. Keeping these contacts current is required by ICANN and is important for receiving renewal notices, transfer approvals, and ownership verifications.
Why domain contacts matter
Under the 2013 Registrar Accreditation Agreement, registrars must take action when registrants do not verify the accuracy of their domain contact details. When ICANN or your registrar contacts you to verify, you have 15 days to confirm your information.
Accurate domain contacts are also essential in cases of ownership dispute and for ensuring you receive notices about renewals and policy changes. If your contacts are not valid and your domain is suspended by ICANN, your website will display a temporary suspended page with instructions to re-activate the domain using email verification and a security captcha.
Account contacts vs. domain contacts
Account contact details identify you as the Exact Hosting customer. Exact Hosting uses these contacts first when sending notices about invoices, service suspensions, platform changes, or newsletters you have subscribed to.
Domain registrant and contact details identify the domain owner to ICANN, the registry, and Exact Hosting. These are used for domain-specific notices such as ICANN verification, transfer approvals, and renewal reminders. They can be different from your account contact.
Understanding domain contact roles
Contact role | What it represents |
|---|---|
Registrant Contact | Individual or organization registering the domain name (the legal owner). |
Admin Contact | Individual or organization authorized by the registrant to manage the domain. |
Tech Contact | Individual or organization responsible for technical management, such as DNS. |
Before you begin
- An Exact Hosting account. You need login credentials for the Exact Hosting Portal.
- Accurate replacement details. Have the updated name, organization, address, phone number, and email ready before you begin.
- Awareness of the 60-day transfer lock. Changing the registrant email may trigger a 60-day lock that prevents transferring the domain. Plan ahead if a transfer is upcoming.
Step 1: Sign in to the Exact Hosting Portal
Open the Exact Hosting Portal and sign in with your credentials.
Step 2: Open the Domains section
At the top of the client area, click Domains to view your domain list.
Step 3: Open the domain you want to update
Click anywhere on the row for the domain you want to manage to open its admin page.
Step 4: Open Contact information
From the Manage menu on the left side of the page, click Contact information. You can view and edit the full contact details for the registrant, admin, and tech contacts here.
Step 5: Choose how to populate the contact details
You have two options for filling out the contact details:
- Use existing account contact. Select this if you want the domain contacts to match your primary account contact details.
- Specify custom information below. Select this if you want to enter contact details that differ from your account holder details (for example, if the domain is owned by an organization other than the billing account holder).
Step 6: Save your changes
Once you have made the necessary updates, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save changes.
Warning: Updating the registrant email may apply a 60-day transfer lock to the domain. Exact Hosting cannot lift this lock once it is in place. If you are planning a transfer, update contacts well in advance.
Next steps
- Verify your registrant email. Watch for an ICANN verification request after updating; you typically have 15 days to confirm.
- Review auto-renew status. Now that your contact info is current, confirm your renewal preferences. See Managing domain auto-renewal status.
- Consider ID Protection. If you want to keep personal contact details out of the public WHOIS database, ask Support about ID Protection options.
